Chapter 15

“The only tyrant I accept in this world is the still small voice within.”- Mahatma Gandhi

12,871 Years Ago

Kasos stared down at the sand, thinking to himself.

Part of him still couldn’t believe that had just happened, and the other part had known all along that it would. So it evened out, and left him feeling hollow and alone. He dropped his sword into the dust and sat down amid the bodies.

One body was conspicuously absent from the pile however. That particular body had been missing since the morning, and the only evidence indicating why it was absent, were the eight OTHER bodies heaped where by all right, it should still be laying.

Three hours ago, the body of his best friend Gantavious had lain where he was now sitting. Kasos had spent hours making sure that that particular body was kept alive. …But now it was gone.

A week ago, his “best friend” Gantavious found him in one of the canyons in the desert where he was hiding.

“Best friend.”

The words filled Kasos’ mind with something akin to bitterness on the tongue; a revolting sensation one sought to rid oneself of as soon as able.

“Friendship” did not exist.

Gantavious had appeared in Kasos’ hidden camp, and had been all smiles. He had said that the elders had been mistaken, and that everything was as it should be again in the village. Told him that they could go home. Together. He could return as a Son of the Village and all would be forgotten.

…Kasos knew immediately he was lying, of course. He was no fool. Plus, Gantavious had always been a terrible liar. Since they were children, Kasos had always been able to see through his friend’s fabrications. But for some reason, Kasos had walked down to him anyway. Had left the protected shelter of the canyon wall, and chosen not to spring his deadly trap. …He didn’t know why he hadn’t killed Gantavious right then and there. Perhaps he was hoping he was wrong about him? He didn’t know. Something had stayed his hand and he gave his friend the benefit of the doubt.

It soon turned out that he had been right after all though. The beast in his head was always right, it seemed. Kasos turned around for a moment, and Gantavious had taken the opening to try to stab him in the back. He had given him no warning; no chance to defend himself. His sword form was sloppy though. As always. Kasos had dodged the strike and put a dagger through the other man’s stomach before he got the chance to try again. The man had looked amazed as the blade slide in; as if he couldn’t believe that Kasos had the strength to do it. And then as Gantavious lay on the rocks bleeding, he spun a tale of how sorry he was, and about how he didn’t want to hurt him, and how he was his best friend and a brother. Reminded him of the many battles they had seen together and that they were “family.
